Wonton soup is a classic Chinese dish featuring delicate wonton dumplings served in a flavorful broth. Here’s a simple recipe to make it at home:


Wonton Soup Recipe

Ingredients

For the Wontons:

  • 200g (7 oz) ground pork (or substitute with chicken, shrimp, or tofu)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 green onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • 1/4 tsp white pepper (optional)
  • 20-25 wonton wrappers (store-bought or homemade)
  • Water (for sealing wontons)

For the Soup:

  • 1.5 liters (6 cups) chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, lightly smashed
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • Optional: Bok choy, spinach, or mushrooms for added vegetables

Instructions

1. Prepare the Wonton Filling:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the ground pork, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, green onion, cornstarch, and white pepper. Mix well until the filling is evenly combined.

2. Assemble the Wontons:

  • Place a wonton wrapper on a clean surface. Add about 1 teaspoon of filling to the center.
  • Dip your finger in water and moisten the edges of the wrapper.
  • Fold the wrapper into a triangle, pressing the edges to seal. Bring the two bottom corners together and press to form a classic wonton shape. Repeat until all the filling is used.

3. Prepare the Soup:

  • In a large pot, combine the broth, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, and garlic. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  • Add any optional vegetables (e.g., bok choy or mushrooms) and cook until tender.

4. Cook the Wontons:

  • Bring a separate pot of water to a boil. Gently drop the wontons into the boiling water and cook for 3-5 minutes, or until they float to the surface and the filling is cooked through.
  • Remove the wontons with a slotted spoon and transfer them to the simmering broth.

5. Serve:

  • Ladle the soup and wontons into bowls. Garnish with sliced green onions and serve hot.
