Southern Fried Cabbage with Shrimp

Prep Time: 10 mins | Cook Time: 20 mins | Total Time: 30 mins
Servings: 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb large shrimp, peeled & deveined (tails on or off)

  • 6 slices bacon, chopped (or 2 tbsp butter/oil for a lighter version)

  • 1 small onion, diced

  • 1 bell pepper, diced (any color)

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 small head green cabbage, chopped (about 6 cups)

  • 1 tsp smoked paprika

  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1 tsp Creole or Cajun seasoning (like Tony Chachere’s)

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • ½ tsp salt (adjust to taste)

  • ½ cup chicken or vegetable broth (or water)

  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar (or lemon juice)

  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Bacon:

    • In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove bacon with a slotted spoon, leaving the drippings in the pan.

  2. Sauté Vegetables:

    • Add onion and bell pepper to the bacon grease (or butter/oil) and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened.

    • Stir in garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

  3. Cook the Cabbage:

    • Add chopped cabbage, smoked paprika, cayenne, garlic powder, onion powder, Creole seasoning, black pepper, and salt. Stir well.

    • Pour in chicken broth and apple cider vinegar. Cover and cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender but still slightly crisp.

  4. Add the Shrimp:

    • Push the cabbage to the sides of the pan and add shrimp in a single layer. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side until pink and opaque.

  5. Finish & Serve:

    • Stir in the crispy bacon (reserve some for garnish).

    • Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

    • Garnish with sliced green onions and serve hot over rice, grits, or with cornbread.

Tips:

  • For extra flavor, use andouille sausage or smoked turkey instead of bacon.

  • If using frozen shrimp, thaw and pat dry before cooking.

  • Add a dash of hot sauce or red pepper flakes for more heat.

Enjoy your Southern Fried Cabbage with Shrimp—a hearty, flavorful dish that’s quick and easy to make! Let me know if you’d like any modifications. 😊
