Yellow butter cake with chocolate cream cheese frosting

Here’s a delightful recipe for a classic yellow butter cake with rich chocolate cream cheese frosting:

Yellow Butter Cake

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups (320g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240ml) whole milk, room temperature

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture in three additions, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and smooth the tops.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting

Ingredients:

  • 8 oz (225g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 1/2 cups (420g) powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup (45g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tbsp heavy cream (as needed)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter together until smooth and creamy.
  2. Sift in the powdered sugar and cocoa powder to avoid lumps, and beat until well combined.
  3. Add the vanilla extract and mix until incorporated.
  4. Gradually add the heavy cream, one tablespoon at a time, until the frosting reaches your desired consistency. It should be smooth and spreadable.

Assembly:

  1. Place one cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand. Spread a layer of frosting on top.
  2. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  3. Decorate as desired. Serve and enjoy!
