Homemade Rice with Tres Leches Recipe (Serves 6–8)

Ingredients:

  • For the rice:
    • 1 cup white rice (long-grain or medium-grain)
    • 2 cups water
    • 1 cinnamon stick
    • 1 pinch of salt
  • For the tres leches mixture:
    • 1 cup evaporated milk
    • 1 cup condensed milk
    • 1 cup whole milk or heavy cream
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • For the topping:
    • Whipped cream (store-bought or homemade)
    • Ground cinnamon for dusting
    • Fresh fruits (e.g., strawberries, mango slices) or nuts (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Rice:
    • Rinse the rice until the water runs clear to remove excess starch.
    • In a medium saucepan, combine the rice, water, cinnamon stick, and salt.
    • Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for about 18–20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed.
    • Remove the cinnamon stick and set the rice aside to cool slightly.
  2. Prepare the Tres Leches Mixture:
    • In a mixing bowl, whisk together evaporated milk, condensed milk, whole milk, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon (if using).
  3. Combine:
    • Transfer the warm rice to a serving dish (a large shallow dish or individual cups work well).
    • Pour the tres leches mixture evenly over the rice. Let it soak for at least 30 minutes at room temperature, or refrigerate for 1–2 hours for a chilled dessert.
  4. Serve:
    • Top with whipped cream and a dusting of ground cinnamon. Add fresh fruit or nuts if desired.

Tips:

  • For extra creaminess, replace the whole milk with heavy cream.
  • If you prefer a sweeter dish, drizzle a little extra condensed milk on top before serving.
  • Make ahead for a more intense flavor as the rice absorbs the milk over time.
