Mini Sausages or Sliced Hot Dogs in Sweet and Savory Sauce

This easy-to-make dish is perfect for parties, potlucks, or even a quick snack. Mini sausages or sliced hot dogs simmered in a flavorful sauce make for a crowd-pleasing appetizer.

Ingredients

For the Main:

  • 1 pound (450 g) mini sausages or sliced hot dogs
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (optional for browning)

For the Sauce:

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey (optional for extra sweetness)
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard or yellow mustard
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional, for a smoky kick)

Garnish (optional):

  • Chopped parsley
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Sausages

  1. If using mini sausages, ensure they are defrosted if frozen. If using hot dogs, slice them into 1-inch pieces for easy eating.
  2. Optional: Heat a skillet over medium heat with a tablespoon of oil. Lightly brown the sausages or hot dog slices for 2-3 minutes, turning occasionally. This step enhances the flavor and adds a slight crispness.

Step 2: Make the Sauce

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine ketchup, brown sugar, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, honey (if using), mustard, minced garlic, onion powder, black pepper, and smoked paprika.
  2. Stir the mixture over medium heat until the ingredients are well combined and the sauce starts to bubble gently. This should take about 3-5 minutes.

Step 3: Combine Sausages and Sauce

  1. Add the browned sausages or sliced hot dogs into the saucepan with the sauce. Stir well to ensure each piece is coated evenly.
  2. Reduce the heat to low and let the sausages simmer in the sauce for 10-15 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 4: Serve

  1. Transfer the saucy sausages to a serving bowl.
  2. Garnish with chopped parsley or a sprinkle of sesame seeds for added color and texture.

Serving Suggestions

  • Appetizer: Serve with toothpicks for easy grabbing.
  • Over Rice: Pour the sausages and sauce over steamed white rice for a quick meal.
  • With Bread: Serve alongside crusty bread or dinner rolls to scoop up the delicious sauce.
  • Party Style: Keep the sausages warm in a slow cooker on the “low” setting for easy serving at gatherings.

Tips and Variations

  1. Spicy Twist: Add 1-2 teaspoons of sriracha, hot sauce, or chili flakes to the sauce for a kick.
  2. Tangy Option: Include 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar or pineapple juice for a tangy flavor.
  3. Smoky Flavor: Substitute smoked sausage or kielbasa for a deeper, smoky taste.
  4. Vegetarian Version: Use plant-based mini sausages or hot dogs and adjust cooking times as needed.

Make-Ahead and Storage

  • Make-Ahead: Prepare the sausages and sauce up to a day in advance. Store them separately in airtight containers. Reheat together before serving.
  • Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheating: Warm gently on the stovetop or microwave, adding a splash of water if the sauce has thickened too much.

Why This Recipe Works

  • Balance of Flavors: The sweetness of ketchup and brown sugar pairs beautifully with the tanginess of mustard and soy sauce.
  • Versatility: Works equally well with mini sausages, sliced hot dogs, or even meatballs.
  • Simplicity: Minimal prep and cooking time make this a go-to recipe for busy days or impromptu gatherings.

This recipe is sure to become a favorite, whether you’re hosting a party or looking for a quick, satisfying dish. The combination of tender sausages with a sweet and savory glaze is irresistible!
